Aleykutty John

On March 13, 1939, Aleykutty (Kunjamma) John was born to Vattachackal Kurian Mathai and Annamma Cherian (Eravikulangara) in Punnavely, Kerala. She grew up in a village as the middle child along with her 6 sisters and 1 brother. She excelled in school, especially mathematics. She studied nursing and became an RN and midwife at ETCM Hospital in Kolar, India. While there she met her husband A.G. John, who was the chief pharmacist at ETCM Hospital. They had their daughter Sunu while in Kolar, and Aleykutty continued her career by teaching nursing.

In 1967, she had the opportunity to come to the US as an exchange nurse and lived in New Jersey. After her husband joined her, they built their lives in this country. Aleykutty and A.G. settled in Southern California.

Aleykutty then had two sons, George (Sugu) in 1974 and Matt (Saju) in 1976. She spent much of her professional life at Kaiser Hospital, where she worked the overnight shift as an RN on the Labor and Delivery and then Post Partum floors.

She is survived by her three children, son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Manju and grandchildren Christian, David, Kayla and Kaitlin. She is also survived by her sisters, Amminikutty George, Sarama Mathew and Lilly Kuruvilla and brother Professor V.M. Kurian.
