Alastair Nicol

Alastair "Al" Nicol, 87, of Pasadena, California, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026—the exact day of his 59th wedding anniversary.

Alastair was born on May 3, 1939, in Greenock, Scotland, to Alexander and May Nicol. As a young man, he sailed the world as a merchant mariner. After witnessing the sights and smells of the Ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco, he fell in love with the United States. At just 17 years old, he immigrated to Glendale, California, in 1956. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1957 and went on to serve his adopted country in the U.S. Army, serving most of his time as an accountant and a soccer coach.

Alastair pursued his education at Glendale College and UCLA, paving the way for a successful, lifelong career in banking, during which he graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington. He began his professional journey at Security Bank and retired from Union Bank in 2004.

On August 12, 1967, Al married DeAnn Judkins. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Al joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1968 and served faithfully in numerous callings throughout his life, including Temple Worker, Bishop of the Glendale First Ward, and Institute Director at Glendale College. He also dedicated significant time to the Boy Scouts of America and various community causes. Following his retirement, he and DeAnn shared the joy of serving a full-time mission together in Toronto, Canada.

In his retirement years, Al found happiness in simple and meaningful things: Family history, temple work, gardening, frequenting Costco, embarking on ocean cruises with DeAnn, and enjoying lunch with his buddies. He loved solving the world’s problems during his daily phone calls with his brother, Kenneth. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family and adored his grandchildren.

Alastair is survived by his beloved wife, DeAnn; his daughters, Karen Colemere (Scott), Lesley Ward (Joseph), and Valerie Bunker (Christopher); his brother, Kenneth Nicol (Barbara Geisen); and his 14 cherished grandchildren, seven grandsons and seven granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Aileen Nicol and Jean Howie (Ralston); his brother, Gordon Nicol; his son, Derek A. Nicol; and his granddaughter, AnnMarie Colemere.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Heart2Heart Hospice Care, especially Lucine, Monica, Arbi, Edwin and Elina, for their exceptionally attentive and expert care.

Services:

A graveside service and Interment will take place on Saturday, August 29, at 11:00 am at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy, Utah. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1101 N. Central Avenue, Glendale, California.
