Agnes Cliffe died peacefully at her home in Claremont, California at the age of 91 on April 13, 2023. She is survived by her daughter, Debra (Daniel) Carter of Oakhurst, California, son Philip (Lynette) Cliffe, of Blue Springs, Missouri, daughter-in-law Lynn Cliffe of Rancho Cucamonga, California, grandsons Brandon (Katelyn) Carter and Jared (Joanie) Carter of Fresno, California, and granddaughter Ashley Cliffe of Rancho Cucamonga, as well as seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Cliffe, and son, Daniel Cliffe.
Agnes was born on January 14, 1932, in Lansing, Michigan to Robert M. and Elizabeth D. Bowden, the youngest of seven children. She worked as a secretary in Chicago before marrying Charles Cliffe, the love of her life, in 1951 when he was in the Navy. They were stationed at Jacksonville, Florida, where their first child was born, then returned to Lansing. In 1958, the family moved to Pomona, California, where they lived for 35 years. During that time, she worked as a secretary in various schools and educational programs. She also worked for many years at the LA County Fair. Agnes and Chuck were very active in their church, Pomona First Baptist, serving in music and youth ministries. She also worked as the church bookkeeper for several years. Agnes had a beautiful voice and sang for many years in the choir. She also played in the handbell choir. She was an accomplished Bible scholar, and never tired of studying the scriptures. One of her favorite passages was Philippians 4:6-8. Her love for the Lord is reflected in her children and grandchildren, whom she prayed for every day of her life. Agnes’ trust in God never wavered.
Agnes loved to travel and had been all over the world. Her parents were from Scotland and she loved her heritage and visited their homeland twice. She became “Lady Agnes Elizabeth Bowden Cliffe” when she acquired property in the Scottish Highlands. After Chuck retired, they sold their home, bought a motorhome, and traveled around the country serving with the Mobile Missions Assistance Program for several years. She was also awarded for her volunteer work with several other associations. Agnes was a talented golfer, and they eventually settled in a home in Upland, California, that backed up to a golf course. She was very competitive and loved to play games all her life. Several years after Chuck passed away, she moved to Claremont Manor Retirement Center and had many friends there.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 20th, at Grace Church, 1515 S Glendora Ave, Glendora, California. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Agnes’ life. A private graveside service will be held prior to that. In lieu of flowers, Agnes requested that remembrances be made to the International Essential Tremor Foundation, PO Box 14005, Lenexa, Kansas 66285-4005, or at www.EssentialTremor.org.
