Abelardo "Nanding" Paraiso, passed away on January 11, 2026, in Arcadia, California, at the age of 95. Born on January 2, 1931, in Manila, Philippines, Nanding’s life was characterized by his unwavering love for family and a vibrant enthusiasm that touched everyone he met.
After losing his mother at just 5 years old, Nanding and his younger brother were raised by his aunt and grandfather. He built a professional career as a basketball player in the Philippines, where his talent and passion established a legacy that followed throughout his life. Whether he was bowling, dancing or enjoying a walk, his dedication to fitness was surpassed only by his appreciation for music and the delight he took in preparing meals for his family. Relocating to Los Angeles, the birthplace of his wife, Betty, he left the court behind, working as a machinist until he retired in 1982. This pivotal change allowed him to devote himself wholeheartedly to his cherished family.
Those who had the privilege to know Nanding will remember him as a man of humor and storytelling, captivating audiences with tales that brought laughter and connection. His and Betty's hospitality shone brightly during festive occasions, notably in their home where holidays were met with open arms and where New Year's Eve parties filled the air with joy, singing, and dance.
Nanding took immense pride in the accomplishments of his loved ones. He was a devoted father to Brenda and Cindy, demonstrating consistent support and presence, that included never missing a graduation or a milestone moment. He celebrated the achievements of his children and grandchildren with all the enthusiasm of a number one fan, instilling in them the values of hard work and gratitude. His grandchild, Kelly, along with his great-grandson Brayden, were the joy of his life, and he cherished each moment spent with them.
He is survived by his daughter Brenda and her husband Danilo, granddaughter Kelly, grandson-in-law Al, great-grandson Brayden, and a large extended family, who will forever hold the memories of their time shared with him close to their hearts. Preceding him in passing are his beloved wife Betty, father Lazaro, mother Marcelina, and daughter Cindy. Each of them, too, left indelible marks on the tapestry of his life.
Nanding's legacy is one of love, laughter, and commitment to family values. A visitation will be held at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California, on February 6, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at the Church of the Hills at Forest Lawn on February 7, 2026, commencing at 12:30 PM and concluding at 1:30 PM.
As we reflect on Nanding's life, let us honor him not only through our sorrow but through the rich memories we hold dear—memories of a remarkable man who truly lived, loved, and left a legacy that will endure through the generations. His spirit will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
